Stories from Newcomers to Canada’s forthcoming book, Geographies of the Heart brings together newcomer stories from around the province in an edited volume which will be of interest to Adult Educators, settlement practitioners, newcomers, and the general public. The voices that have created this book and project come from many different walks of life. They came to Canada as privately sponsored refugees, government-assisted refugees, refugee claimants, international students, and economic immigrants. These stories challenge us all to think differently and more deeply about the contemporary Canadian immigration landscape. Bringing together a diverse array of newcomer voices, each narrative shares compelling, first-hand experiences of coming to and living in Canada. The writing component of this project began in February, 2020. We had two meetings before Covid-19 hit in March, and we moved online. As a result, most of the writing process has taken place remotely via zoom, and the community has met regularly over this platform throughout the year. The stories from this community of newcomers represent the multiplicity and complexity of experiences that are often ignored in narratives of immigration and forced migration to Canada. Understanding a range of experiences is especially important in a media landscape which continues to struggle against presenting one single narrative as “the” story of immigration. Her first plays, The Wrong Bashir and the Frontliners, are in development with companies in both cities. She has been a resident at the Banff Centre in Alberta, the Stratford Theatre Festival, and Millay Colony for the Arts in New York. Her plays have been shortlisted for the Playwrights Guild of Canada Surefire! Lists, the Ellen Ross Stuart Playwriting Award (Tarragon Theatre & Ontario Arts Foundation), the Voaden Literary Prize, and won a 2020 national Silk Road Emerging Artist Award. Her short stories have been shortlisted for the Alice Munro Award and longlisted for the CBC short story prize. Hailing from Richmond, Virginia, Dr. Tobias Keene brings a bit of unabashed Southern hospitality to all his patients. He moved to Washington, D.C. over thirty years ago as a freshman at Ivy College. Right after graduation, he attended World University’s School of Dentistry. Before opening Keene Dental in 1994, he worked for free clinics and some of the finest practices in the District. He is part of the 123 Dental Association and stays up-to-date on the latest dental discoveries. She is an experienced instructor with expertise in curriculum design and faculty professional development applying insight and sensitivity to her work in India, Australia, China, the USA, and the United Arab Emirates. Raymonde is active in the Abbotsford Restorative Justice and Advocacy Association as a victim/offender conference facilitator. Raymonde serves on the Board of Directors of Archway Community Services in Abbotsford, BC.
